دانشمندان با همکاری دانشکده‌ی پزشکی Duke-NUS در سنگاپور، از موش‌های 75 هفته‌ای (معادل 55 سال در انسان) استفاده کردند و با تزریق یک آنتی‌بادی ضد IL-11 (دارویی که اثرات IL-11 را در بدن متوقف می‌کند)، موش‌ها را تیمار کردند. این امر به طور متوسط بیش از 20 درصد به عمر طبیعی موش ها افزود!
نتایج منتشر شده در Nature بسیار چشمگیر بود، به طوری که موش‌ها از سن 75 هفتگی تا زمان مرگ، داروی ضد IL-11 دریافت کردند و میانگین طول عمر آنها در جنس نر 22.4 درصد و در جنس ماده 25 درصد افزایش یافت. موش‌های تیمار شده به طور متوسط 155 هفته زندگی کردند، در حالی که طول عمر موش‌های درمان نشده (گروه کنترل یا شاهد) 120 هفته بود.
این درمان تا حد زیادی باعث کاهش مرگ و میر ناشی از سرطان در حیوانات شد، همچنین بسیاری از بیماری‌های ناشی از فیبروز، التهاب مزمن و متابولیسم ضعیف را که نشانه‌های پیری هستند، کاهش داد. در این آزمایش عوارض جانبی بسیار کمی در موش ها مشاهده شد.
