Чеченцы древний народ Кавказа. Первые сведения об этом народе мы встречаем в исторических документах VI-VII вв. н. э. на грузинском и армянском языках. В своём историческом труде, «Армянская география», армянский летописец Моисей Хоренский упоминает чеченцев под названием нахчматьяны. (Сами себя чеченцы называют «нахчий», что означает «люди», «народ»).
