Thomas Alva Edison (February 11, 1847 – October 18, 1931) was an American inventor and businessman. He developed many devices in fields such as electric power generation, mass communication, sound recording, and motion pictures. These inventions, which include the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and early versions of the electric light bulb, have had a widespread impact on the modern industrialized world. He was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of organized science and teamwork to the process of invention, working with many researchers and employees. He established the first industrial research laboratory.

Thomas Edison was of Dutch descent by way of New Jersey; the surname had originally been "Edeson" through his patrilineal family line. His great-grandfather, loyalist John Edeson, fled New Jersey for Nova Scotia in 1784.

Dejlig er jorden [The earth is (so) beautiful] is a Nordic religious hymn. The hymn is usually sung during Christmas. The hymn has origins from Silesia and Germany, and the melody used for the hymn has its origins in Silesian folk music. It was published by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben under the collection "Schlesische Volkslieder mit ihren Melodien" in 1842, and the hymn is thought to have origins from pilgrims on their travel to Jerusalem.
