You may wonder how the French became top historical performers—producing abundant art, inventing numerous things, creating world-class cuisine, and achieving Europe’s best military win-loss ratio. Their secret: they work to live, not live to work. This approach fosters a productive culture with boundless energy, ready to haul ass when things go down. It is proof that an Anglo-Protestant work ethic is not the only way. The French strike the balance between northern and southern Europe.

I wonder what all the Bucks, Clyde Do Somethings, and Yukon Strongs are gonna think about Canadian identity when their one horse towns are flooded with Indians. Their luxury beliefs in a cultural mosaic 25 years ago will be put to the test.
There’s a great thread by Désir de Grenouille on the Canadian Slop phenomena.

Prince Arthur in Canada
Prince Arthur, son of Queen Victoria, first came to Canada in 1869. Between serving with the Montreal Rifle Brigade and defending Canada against the Fenian Raid of 1870, he embraced the Canadian climate and its winter sports. The Prince Arthur Toboggan Club was one of his patronages. During the early talks of Confederation there were some ideas of making Canada an “auxiliary” Kingdom of the Empire. One option was put forward by the former Irish Revolutionary, Thomas D’Arcy McGee, to have one of Queen Victoria’s younger sons set up as a King who would reign from Canada, Prince Arthur being the most favoured. This never came to be, however, but Prince Arthur would return to Canada as the Duke of Connaught in 1911 to take up the position of Governor General, the only British Prince ever to do so. Prince Arthur died in 1942 at the age of 91.
