تعیین مورفولوژی ذرات و نمونه‌های زیستی یکی از نیازهای مهم در صنعت، بیوتکنولوژی، پزشکی و زیست‌شناسی به شمار می‌رود. از آنجایی که ویژگی‌های فیزیکی و شیمیایی مواد عموما به توزیع اندازه و شکل فازی آن‌ها وابسته است، تعیین آن نقش بسیار مهمی در علوم شیمی، پزشکی، زیست‌فناوری، نانو فن‌آوری، داروسازی و همچنین فرآیند‌های صنعتی، مواد غذایی و ... خواهد داشت. همچنین تغییرات مورفولوژیکی سلول‌های زنده ارتباط مستقیمی با میزان سلامتی سلول و نوع بیماری دارد. مطالعه دینامیک سلول‌ها در تشخیص اولیه بسیاری از بیماری‌ها و درمان بهنگام آن‌ها مؤثر است.
