Бій тривав кілька годин. Українські бійці відбили кілька атак, завдавши ворогу втрат до 300 загиблих. Однак через значну перевагу противника захисникам віддали наказ відступати.
Частина студентської сотні, відходячи, втратила орієнтир і натрапила на більшовиків. 27 юнаків потрапили в полон. Їх катували, після чого стратили.
