В порту города Тартус, центра одноименной провинции, расположена единственная российская военно-морская база в Средиземноморье. В 1971 году там был создан пункт материально-технического обеспечения советского флота. Россия в декабре 2017 получила обе базы в пользование на безвозмездной основе сроком на 49 лет.
