Вважається, що перші версії «Щедрика» на основі українського народного співу Леонтович міг створити, коли жив і працював у Покровську в 1904-1908 роках.
Леонтовича застрелив радянський чекіст у 1921 році. Але його композиція стала символом української незалежності.
