Одним із перших лат. diplomaticus у значенні "той, що стосується міжнародних відносин" використав німецький філософ, математик, мовознавець Готфрід Лейбніц в праці Codex Juris Gentium Diplomaticus "Зведення дипломатичного права" (1693 р.).
У нашій мові слово дипломатія має дещо негативний відтінок ще здавна, що підтверджує вислів розводити дипломатію "приховувати свої справжні наміри, діяти обережно".
