In less than a decade, the US Air Force dropped over 2 million tons of ordnance on the Southeast Asian country of Laos, making it the most heavily bombed country in history. It was on this day, 60 years ago, that the US launched Operation Barrel Roll.

By the time Operation Barrel Roll ended on March 29, 1973, the US had dropped 260 million bombs on Laos, more than all of the bombs dropped during WWII combined.

The US Air Force conducted 580,344 bombing missions in Laos and dropped the equivalent of eight bombs a minute, equivalent to 2 million tons of ordinance. Read on to learn more about the CIA’s “Secret War in Laos.”

Markets have been expecting heavy restrictions on Russian oil, some of which the U.S. has already imposed, and that would reduce the global supply and bring about even more burdensome inflation. Friday’s performance was part of a larger shift. For the week, the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq fell 2%, 2.9%, and 3.5%, respectively.
