(дер. Лодейно, Вологодская губ.), Маршал Советского Союза (1944 г.), дважды Герой Советского Союза (1944 г., 1945 г.), Герой ЧССР, Герой МНР. Участник Первой мировой войны, унтер-офицер. В Красной Армии – с 1918 года. В годы Гражданской войны сражался с войсками А.В. Колчака, атамана Г.М. Семенова и японскими оккупантами. После войны – на командных должностях. В 1937-1938 годах командовал особой группой войск, направленной в Монголию для прикрытия ее границ от нападения японцев. В 1940-1941 годах – командующий войсками ЗабВО и СКВО. Во время Великой Отечественной войны командовал 19-й армией и войсками ряда фронтов. На заключительном этапе командовал 1-м Украинским фронтом, участвовавшим в Силезской и Берлинской операциях, спасении г. Праги. После войны – главнокомандующий Центральной группой советских войск. В 1946-1948 годах – главнокомандующий Сухопутными войсками – 1-й зам. министра обороны, с 1950 года – главный инспектор Советской Армии – зам. министра обороны.
