كان الأعمش متشيعا للدرجة التي جعلت يزيد بن زريع ينسبه لـ "السبئية" حسب أحمد بن حنبل، ولم يكن حبيب بن أبي ثابت أقل تشيعا منه.
وحبيب ذاته هو الذي يروي عن ابن عمر أنه ندم على عدم قتاله "الفئة الباغية مع علي"، بينما تبين رواية أخرى عن سالم بن عبد الله بن عمر أن أباه إنما قصد "عبد الله بن الزبير" بالفئة الباغية، وقد رجح الذهبي هذه الرواية.
مثل هذه النماذج لا تقود إلا إلى الاعتقاد بأن شهادات الرواة الشيعة محل نظر، فهم يؤثرون في وجهات نظر من يروون عنهم. انطلاقا من احتياجاتهم الفكرية والسياسية
وسبب تعاطفهم مع المختار بن أبي عبيد يقينا كان إقدامه على قتل عمر بن سعد بن أبي وقاص وشمر بن ذي الجوشن وكثيرا من المشاركين في قمع الحسين بن علي.
وبمناسبة المختار الثقفي، فالرواة الشيعة كالأعمش وأضرابه لا يكادون يذمونه بعكس الحجاج بن يوسف مثلا! رغم أن الأول مدع للنبوة حسب "أهل السنة".
