В небольшом предисловии переводчик отмечает: «в этой попытке перевода некоторых из последних стихотворений Целана упор сделан на таком разрешении конфликта между жизнью и искусством, для которого выбор в пользу отчуждённой мелодики и развеянной по ветру визуальности возможен лишь перед онемелым лицом истории, в негреющем излучении истины, передать которое устами традиционно понятой выразительности (и тем более самовыражения) было б предательством».
