Въ годы Первой міровой войны воевалъ на Чёрномъ морѣ и одержалъ 36 побѣдъ, потопивъ суда общей валовой вмѣстимостью 8973 брутто-регистровыхъ тонны. Побѣды свои одерживалъ на подлодке-рекордсменѣ "Тюлень".
За отличную службу Китицынъ былъ отмѣченъ орденомъ св. Анны 4-й степени съ надписью "За храбрость"; св. Анны 3-й степени съ мечами и бантомъ; орденомъ св. Станислава 2-й степени съ мечами; орденомъ св. Георгія 4-й степени; орденомъ св. Владиміра 4-й степени; Георгіевскимъ оружіемъ.
