Александр Николаевич Варганов восстановил великую русскую маховую резьбу, а на ее основе — некогда знаменитую сергиевскую игрушку (резную и из папье-маше), старобогородскую скульптуру-игрушку и православную резную икону, также воссоздал уникальную круглую православную скульптуру.
Опорой для Варганова послужила маховая резьба в трехгранном поленце и самый устойчивый канон Сергиевской игрушки — ведучка (женщина, ведущая ребенка).
