Юрий Дмитриев был одним из тех, кто открыл место массовых захоронений жертв советского государственного террора в СССР в Карелии — Сандармох, а затем много лет занимался составлением книг памяти погибших от рук советского государства и захороненных в Карелии.

С 2016 года Юрий Дмитриев находится в заключении по сфальсифицированным обвинениям, 15 марта 2022 года Верховный суд Карелии оставил без изменений приговор историку, осужденному на 15 лет колонии.
