Принято считать, что такое разделение ввел Аристотель. Основано оно было на очень простом принципе:
Экзотерика - знание доступное большинству, предназначенное для непосвященных, тогда как Эзотерика - тайное знание. Экзотерический переводилось как "внешний".
Ученики Аристотеля первые несколько лет обучения были Экзотериками, были за "ширмой".Лишь спустя время и доказав свою приверженность, ученик допускался до нового уровня знаний - Эзотерики.
В дальнейшем эти термины использовала философия Нового Времени.
