книга Белла Man of Mathematics (самая интересная книга по истории математики на английском) читается взахлёб. Биографии математиков с органично вплетающимися байками, однако не всегда правдивыми, как признаётся автор:
"It should be noted that the modern higher criticism which has been so effective in discrediting all the interesting anecdotes in the history of mathematics has shown that the astronomical problem was in no way responsible for the loss of Euler’s eye. But how the scholarly critics (or anyone else) come to know so much about the so-called law of cause and effect is a mystery for David Hume’s (a contemporary of Euler) ghost to resolve."
Про Эйлера как минимум половина баек переврана (если не больше). Тем не менее, всячески рекомендую как изящное и вдохновляющее чтение на английском на ночь.
Как минимум Нэш, Робинсон и Дайсон вдохновились книгой настолько, что стали математиками.
