Since its launch in 2013, Telegram has grown from a simple messaging app to a broadcast network. Its user base isnât as vast as WhatsAppâs, and its broadcast platform is a fraction the size of Twitter, but itâs nonetheless showing its use. While Telegram has been embroiled in controversy for much of its life, it has become a vital source of communication during the invasion of Ukraine. But, if all of this is new to you, let us explain, dear friends, what on Earth a Telegram is meant to be, and why you should, or should not, need to care. Pavel Durov, a billionaire who embraces an all-black wardrobe and is often compared to the character Neo from "the Matrix," funds Telegram through his personal wealth and debt financing. And despite being one of the world's most popular tech companies, Telegram reportedly has only about 30 employees who defer to Durov for most major decisions about the platform. The company maintains that it cannot act against individual or group chats, which are âprivate amongst their participants,â but it will respond to requests in relation to sticker sets, channels and bots which are publicly available. But on Friday, Reuters reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin said there had been some âpositive shiftsâ in talks between the two sides.
