🇰🇿QazaqGaz, Kazakhstan's national gas company, is negotiating to join the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project
Kazakhstan first expressed its interest during the Kazakhstan-Afghanistan business forum in October 2024. At the moment, negotiations are underway between QazaqGaz and the state company Turkmengaz.
Kazakhstan's participation in the TAPI gas pipeline project can bring several strategic and economic benefits:
🔹Diversification of export routes
By joining TAPI, Kazakhstan can diversify its natural gas export routes.
🔹Access to new markets
The pipeline will open direct access to large, growing markets in South Asia, particularly India and Pakistan.
🔹 Economic growth
Participation in the project will stimulate economic activity in Kazakhstan during the construction phase and beyond. It will create jobs both directly during construction and operation of the pipeline and indirectly through economic activity generated by increased export revenues.
🔹 Energy diplomacy
Kazakhstan can use this project to strengthen its energy diplomacy by positioning itself as a reliable supplier in the region.
🔹Technological and operational experience
Participation in a large-scale international project such as TAPI will provide Kazakh companies with valuable experience in managing cross-border infrastructure.
🔹Investment opportunities
The project will attract foreign investment into Kazakhstan not only for the pipeline, but also for related infrastructure and possibly other sectors of the economy.
For Kazakhstan, the strategic advantages of participating in TAPI need to be weighed against the possible risks. The project must be in the national interest and contribute positively to long-term economic and geopolitical objectives.
The project is managed by TAPI Pipeline Company Limited, with Turkmengaz holding an 85% stake. Gas Corporation of Afghanistan, Interstate Gas Systems of Pakistan and India's GAIL each hold a 5% stake.
