У фільмі білоруський селянин приїздить на Донбас у пошуках кращої долі у 1932 році. Власне коли на початку якийсь партійний промовець на вокзалі озвучує цю дату, на екрані з'являється череп з написом "ПОМНИ О КОЛЕСАХ". Згодом разом з героєм ми вперше потрапляємо під землю, де нас зустрічає вже конкретна дата 18 вересня 1932 року (через місяць після закону "про п’ять колосків") з тим самим черепом-плакатом поряд. У кінці фільму 1932 рік паралелиться з 1941 роком. Про голод у фільмі не згадується. Проте партія тут погрожує розправою селянам, називає їх сараною і дезертирами.

Навряд чи режисер, який у 1968 році міг говорити про голод і мати підтримку керівництва Кіностудії, відчував таку ж напівсвободу у 1983, але чи міг він обійти цю тему?
