Об истории успеха тридцатилетнего фон Штернберга рассказано в первом номере нового журнала "Нью-Йоркер". Несколько лет Штернберг работал ассистентом кинорежиссеров, затем получил возможность поставить собственный фильм - один из немногих голливудских инди-фильмов 1920-х годов. Сыгравший в нем главную роль Джордж Артур устроил показ в доме Чаплина. Фильм понравился Пикфорд и Фэрбенксу, "Юнайтед Артистс" приобрела права на прокат за 20 тысяч долларов. Чаплин предложил фон Штернбергу поставить драму о рыбаках с Эдной Первиэнс, Пикфорд попросила написать сценарий для ее следующего фильма.

Unfortunately, third-party sales of coins bought in those initial fundraising rounds raised the ire of the SEC, which brought the hammer down on the whole operation. In 2020, officials ordered Telegram to pay a fine of $18.5 million and hand back much of the cash that it had raised.
