Книга бесконечно далека от любых пропагандистских штампов. Можно сказать, это антипропагандистская книга. Она о людях. У Беседина получается выпукло изображать персонажей и судьбы людей.
Художественно тексты сделаны хорошо, у автора есть язык и стиль. Книга не лёгкая и не оптимистичная. Довольно тяжёлая по эмоциональному окрасу и пасмурная. Но хорошо передаёт чувства людей, оказавшихся возле войны или в её предверии.
