Overall, extreme levels of fear in the market seems to have morphed into something more resembling concern. For example, the Cboe Volatility Index fell from its 2022 peak of 36, which it hit Monday, to around 30 on Friday, a sign of easing tensions. Meanwhile, while the price of WTI crude oil slipped from Sundayā€™s multiyear high $130 of barrel to $109 a pop. Markets have been expecting heavy restrictions on Russian oil, some of which the U.S. has already imposed, and that would reduce the global supply and bring about even more burdensome inflation. On Telegramā€™s website, it says that Pavel Durov ā€œsupports Telegram financially and ideologically while Nikolai (Duvov)ā€™s input is technological.ā€ Currently, the Telegram team is based in Dubai, having moved around from Berlin, London and Singapore after departing Russia. Meanwhile, the company which owns Telegram is registered in the British Virgin Islands. Markets continued to grapple with the economic and corporate earnings implications relating to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. ā€œWe have a ton of uncertainty right now,ā€ said Stephanie Link, chief investment strategist and portfolio manager at Hightower Advisors. ā€œWeā€™re dealing with a war, weā€™re dealing with inflation. We donā€™t know what it means to earnings.ā€ The next bit isnā€™t clear, but Durov reportedly claimed that his resignation, dated March 21st, was an April Foolsā€™ prank. TechCrunch implies that it was a matter of principle, but itā€™s hard to be clear on the wheres, whos and whys. Similarly, on April 17th, the Moscow Times quoted Durov as saying that he quit the company after being pressured to reveal account details about Ukrainians protesting the then-president Viktor Yanukovych. Fridayā€™s performance was part of a larger shift. For the week, the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq fell 2%, 2.9%, and 3.5%, respectively.
