Во время Великой Отечественной войны этот небольшой населенный пункт имел важное стратегическое значение: через поселок проходила железная дорога, Минское и Можайское шоссе, по которым шло снабжение войск западного фронта резервами. Это хорошо понимало и немецкое командование. В период битвы за Москву здесь развернулись ожесточенные бои.
