Ранее суд первой инстанции в Сочи назначил ему штраф и выдворение из России — Меликян является гражданином Армении. Однако апелляционный суд отменил решение о выдворении, оставив лишь штраф.
Согласно постановлению суда, Меликяну вменили хранение экземпляра «Ветхого завета» на армянском языке без маркировки, а также использование гаража в качестве часовни.
В 2018 года Маис Меликян стал первым за десятилетия священником Армянской католической церкви, рукоположенным в Москве. Обряд прошел в столичном соборе Непорочного зачатия Пресвятой Девы Марии.
