Тепловоз DF8BN, произведенный китайской CRRC в 2020 году, был переведен на смешанное газодизельное топливо в пропорции 70% (СПГ) на 30% (дизель). В настоящее время он запущен в опытную эксплуатацию на новой линии колеи 1435 мм Абуджа – Кадуна длиной 187 км. Заправку сжиженным газом осуществляет компания Greenville на станции Иду.
Модернизация проведена консорциумом De-Sadel, с которым правительство страны заключило соглашение сроком на 20 лет о переводе на СПГ всего парка железнодорожного перевозчика NRC и дальнейшей технической поддержке. Ожидается, что это поможет сократить эксплутационные расходы на 50%.
Ранее в рамках той же инициативы перевода транспорта на газ правительство страны предложило закупить газотопливный подвижной состав для будущей линии Кано – Маради. В 2023 году с соответствующей просьбой оно обращалось к подрядчику ее строительства – португальской Mota-Engil. Публичного ответа пока не было.
