"It is not voting that keeps a people free, but stubbornness—a man’s determination to manage his own affairs take care of his own family, and keep his own Counsel. When we have lost that stubbornness—as many American have already—the “right” to vote will mean no more here than in the Soviet Union—the right to collaborate with your oppressor." - Professor Thomas Fleming, Southern Partisan Magazine, summer 1982.

Forwarded from The Virginia Flaggers 🇸🇴
Confederate 2nd Lieutenant Edward Alston Thorne Nicholson
37th North Carolina Infantry Regiment, Company E
Gave his life for Southern Independence on March 25, 1865 in a desperate charge on Fort Stedman in Petersburg, Virginia.
8 days later, his brother, Captain William Thorne Nicholson, of the same company, was also killed in the breakthrough of the fort. William had an approved leave in his pocket, but would not leave his men on the eve of battle.
They gave their last full measure in the last few weeks of the war. Patriots of the Cause of Independence.
