Lesson 01: The Glottal T

The most common thing people say when you ask them to do a British accent is something like thisā€¦
"can I have some wa'er"

Here Are Three Quick Truths!
ā€¢ We donā€™t ALWAYS use the glottal T.
ā€¢ Itā€™s not ā€œstupidā€ to use the glottal T. Itā€™s just a style.
ā€¢ Even ā€œposhā€ politicians, and the Queen uses it.

You should know that itā€™s always best to use a mix of Glottal Ts and True Ts in your speech to give you a natural speaking style. Remember, accent is all about STYLE!

The Sound

Say ā€œUH-OH!ā€.
Ok, that middle sound, feel how your throat closes the airway, and that stops any sound coming out?
THATā€™S the sound which will replace the T a LOT in British pronunciation.

Itā€™s VERY common to glottalise the T sound at the end of words:
ā€¢ Hot
ā€¢ But
ā€¢ Not

Some T sounds will NEVER be glottalised!
ā€¢ Taylor SwiFT
ā€¢ Kanye WeST
Also we NEVER glottalise the FIRST!

BUT with the word ā€œItalianā€ NO ONE would ever glottalise THAT T! Everyone would agree that it would
sound weird. Confusing, no?

Same with:
Photograph (Fine)
Photographer (No)
Strategy (Fine)
Strategic (No)

You can kind of see a pattern here: A T between two vowel sounds and the second vowel sound is stressed, itā€™s sort of universally understood that it sounds weird and no one glottalises those.

ALSO! What used to be considered purely American pronunciation - when we change the T sound for a D sound - is now pretty widespread in British English, so it wonā€™t sound TOO American if you sprinkled some D sounds in there, like with the word ā€œbetterā€, pronouncing it like
ā€œBedderā€.

Ok now try THESE sentences, try using a MIX of glottal Ts and True Ts, see how it feels. Develop your own style!

1) ā€œItā€™s hotter than a wet Augus night in Toronto!ā€
2) ā€œItā€™s an absolutely great photo of a turtleā€
3) ā€œA better water bottle for the environmentā€

In 2018, Russia banned Telegram although it reversed the prohibition two years later. Telegram, which does little policing of its content, has also became a hub for Russian propaganda and misinformation. Many pro-Kremlin channels have become popular, alongside accounts of journalists and other independent observers. During the operations, Sebi officials seized various records and documents, including 34 mobile phones, six laptops, four desktops, four tablets, two hard drive disks and one pen drive from the custody of these persons. He said that since his platform does not have the capacity to check all channels, it may restrict some in Russia and Ukraine "for the duration of the conflict," but then reversed course hours later after many users complained that Telegram was an important source of information. The next bit isnā€™t clear, but Durov reportedly claimed that his resignation, dated March 21st, was an April Foolsā€™ prank. TechCrunch implies that it was a matter of principle, but itā€™s hard to be clear on the wheres, whos and whys. Similarly, on April 17th, the Moscow Times quoted Durov as saying that he quit the company after being pressured to reveal account details about Ukrainians protesting the then-president Viktor Yanukovych.
