الطاغوت لغةً: من الطغيان، وهو تجاوز الحد والارتفاع والمبالغة في الكفر، فكل مجاوز حده في العصيان طاغ. وهذه الآية الكريمة توضح المعنى أكثر: ﴿ إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَى الْمَاءُ حَمَلْنَاكُمْ فِي الْجَارِيَةِ ﴾، أي عندما تجاوز الماء حدّه، وارتفع وعلا؛ حملنا أصولكم في السفينة مع نوح عليه السلام.
