مدیر کل میراث فرهنگی، گردشگری و صنایع دستی لرستان اعلام کرد که در کاوش‌های جدید، آثار انسان‌های نئاندرتال از حدود ۴۰ تا ۸۰ هزار سال پیش در غار قمری خرم‌آباد کشف شده است. این غار که پیش‌تر در دو دوره مختلف، ابتدا در سال ۱۳۴۴ توسط فرانک هُل، باستان‌شناس آمریکایی و سپس در سال ۱۳۹۰ توسط بهروز بازگیر، کاوش شده بود، اکنون به مرکز جدیدی برای مطالعه تحولات فرهنگی و زیستی نئاندرتال‌ها در لرستان و غرب ایران تبدیل شده است. به گفته عطا حسن‌پور، یافته‌های اخیر، از جمله شواهد غنی از سکونت نئاندرتال‌ها، امیدواری به کشف بقایای استخوانی و سایر شواهد باستان‌شناسی این دوره کم شناخته را افزایش داده است. این کشفیات می‌تواند افق‌های جدیدی در پژوهش‌های پارینه‌سنگی ایران و خاورمیانه بگشاید.
