Среди защитников Ленинграда был уроженец Осетии - арктический геолог, «Почетный полярник», кавалер ордена Знак Почета, Гатиев Илья Давидович (Дафаевич) (1904-1941). Он родился в с. Христиановском Северной Осетии. В годы учебы в Ленинградском горном институте, во время прохождения практики в 1932 году, на карте Новой Земли, у пролива Маточкин Шар, примерно в 17 км от побережья Карского моря, появился мыс Гатиева, названный в честь студента. В 1934 году поступил на работу во Всесоюзный Арктический институт, уже через год став начальником Первой Чукотской экспедиции. Началась война, из-за брони его не призвали в армию, и он стал ополченцем. Гатиев командовал минерами на подступах к Ленинграду. Беда пришла в конце ноября. Бомба смертельными осколками поразила Илью. Он похоронен в братской могиле в пос. Синявино-1. Фамилия Гатиева на памятной стелле возле ААНИИ, а также на мемориальной доске в здании ВНИИокеангеология в Санкт-Петербурге.
