Трехпалый дятел традиционно появляется зимой в лесах на востоке и юге Ленобласти, а также на Карельском перешейке. В прошлом году его замечали в Линдуловской роще, Петергофе, Пушкине и Центральном парке культуры и отдыха имени Кирова.

Птица носит свое название неслучайно, поскольку только у этого вида среди всех дятлообразных три пальца вместо четырех. Кроме того, они отличаются своими желтыми “шапочками”. Но их “носят” только самцы.

Трехпалый дятел занесен в Красную книгу Ленобласти со статусом “близкий к уязвимому положению”. В Красной книге Петербурга этот вид считается уязвимым. Главная проблема его распространения – уничтожение коренных участков леса.
