Проект в 1930-е разработал великий, без преувеличения, строитель кинотеатров в СССР — Виктор Петрович Калмыков, архитектор Управления кинофикации при Совнаркоме РСФСР. Ему в этом декабре 112 лет. Виктор Петрович умер 39 лет назад.
Соавтором Калмыкова называют архитектора Якова Абрамовича Корнфельда. По их проекту возведены кинотеатры в Смоленске, Твери, Симферополе, но все они были капитально перестроены. Оригинальный вид сохранила только московская «Родина», хотя в 1970-е годы кинотеатр тоже здорово перестроили внутри.
Его сдали в эксплуатацию в 1938 году. Получается, что 82 года он служит москвичам.
