Пассажирский самолет American Airlines, на борту которого находились 64 человека, столкнулся в воздухе с вертолётом армии США Black Hawk недалеко от Национального аэропорта имени Рейгана за пределами Вашингтона, когда тот приближался к взлетно-посадочной полосе.
Самолёт вылетел из Уичито, Канзас. На борту вертолёта, который выполнял учебный полёт, находились трое солдат.
Сотрудники экстренных служб проводят поисково-спасательные работы на замерзшей реке Потомак.
На данный момент известно, что из реки извлекли тела 18 погибших. Уточняется, что вышивших в результате катастрофы пока не обнаружили.
Температура воды в реке сейчас составляет чуть выше нуля по Цельсию. При такой температуре человек теряет сознание от переохлаждения в течение 10-15 минут.
Президент США Дональд Трамп считает, что катастрофы можно было избежать. Экипаж вертолёта должен был изменить курс.
