Тосиро Мифунэ блистает, особенно ближе к концу, когда вместо людей говорят мечи, но затмевает всё живое — Ёко Цукаса и её образ несгибаемой Ити Сасахары.
Помимо не самой типичной для Японии темы и прогрессивного (для 1960-х) отношения к женщине, Кобаяси подкупает картинкой: конфликт постоянно подчёркивается пересекающимися линиями, а то, что мэтр вытворяет с освещением — практически кьяроскуро.
В отличие от смотрящего, все персонажи понимают, что будет в конце, но всё равно ставят вопрос ребром. Горе же тому зрителю, кто не верит в абсолют фатума.
