Руководил попыткой переворота конголезский политик Кристиан Маланга, лидер "Единой конголезской партии" (UDP) который в 1998 году попросил политического убежища в США, жил в Солт-Лейк-Сити, вел оппозиционную деятельность под патронатом #великобритания, а в 2017 году получил достоинство рыцаря ордена Петра и Павла из рук папы Франциска, получил поддержку #ватикан и объявил себя "президентом Республики Заир в изгнании".

В ходе попытки переворота Кристиан Маланга был захвачен силовиками ДРК, а потом пристрелен. Его сыну, гражданину США Марселю Маланге, и его друзьям Тайлеру Томпсону и Бенджамину Залман-Полуну, повезло остаться в живых и пойти под суд.
