در تاریخ ۲۴ خرداد ۱۳۸۷، گروهک تروریستی جندالله به رهبری عبدالمالک ریگی به پاسگاه مرزی شمسر در شهرستان سراوان با کمک عوامل نفوذی منطقه حمله کرد و ۱۶ نفر از پرسنل انتظامی مستقر در این پاسگاه را به گروگان گرفت و به خاک پاکستان منتقل کرد. پس از این گروگان‌گیری، گروهک تروریستی جندالله خواستار آزادی ۲۰۰ نفر از اعضای خود از زندان‌های ایران شد و تهدید کرد در صورت عدم تحقق این خواسته، گروگان‌ها را به قتل می‌رساند. پس از گذشت ۱۶ سال، در دی‌ماه ۱۴۰۳، پیکرهای ۷ نفر از این شهدا در بیابان‌های پاکستان تفحص و به کشور بازگردانده شد.
همچنین در این بین، پیکر سه شهید مرزبانی خراسان رضوی پس از ۱۶ سال به وطن بازگشت.
