Он внешне похож на ранее не отмеченный в Беларуси вид - мерипилус гигантский. Гриб растет у основания стволов и пней лиственных деревьев, чаще всего предпочитая дуб. В Европе его также можно найти на буке, а иногда и на хвойных деревьях. Плодовые тела могут расти на древесине, погруженной в почву, и иметь многочисленные шляпки, которые держатся на одном общем основании.
