interesting data: the number of PDF downloads from Sci-Hub per month, 2016-2023

Surprisingly, the usage of the website only increased after 2020, and that is only counting statistics from original website, not even counting numerous Sci-Hub mirrors!

Sci-Hub got a Web3 domain!

Sci-Hub is now available on two new domains: sci-hub.red and sci-hub.box.

What is special here is that .box domain is blockchain-based, which makes it decentralized and somewhat more resistant to censorship (hopefully!)

The domain address was donated to Sci-Hub by user. The website also runs a new version of Sci-Hub with boxed design (under construction at the moment, but will be running on all mirrors soon)
📚 Sci-Hub and Citations: Open Access Boosts Scientific Impact

New research confirms that papers downloaded from Sci-Hub are cited 1.72 times more than those locked behind paywalls.

🔬 Scientists analyzed data from 12 leading journals in economics, neuroscience, and multidisciplinary research. The conclusion is clear: the more accessible a paper is, the greater its impact.

📊 Moreover, the number of downloads from Sci-Hub is a strong predictor of future citations. This suggests that limited access to scientific knowledge may prevent some research from reaching its full potential.

💡 What do you think? Should all scientific papers be open access, or do publishers have the right to enforce paywalls?
When words are unnecessary.
⚖️ Sci-Hub and the Question of Legalization

Many debates surround Sci-Hub: is it piracy, or a necessary step toward justice?

On one hand, knowledge should be freely accessible to everyone. On the other, publishers claim they are “protecting researchers’ work.” But here are some facts:

Authors of scientific papers do not get paid for their publications.
Journals make billions by selling science back to universities.
Most open-access research is funded by taxpayers!

So, isn’t Sci-Hub simply returning knowledge to the people who already paid for it?

What do you think—should Sci-Hub be legalized?
Abu Ahya al-Hanafi on Copyright, Intellectual Property, and Sci-Hub:

… Anyone who has studied the issue of copyright from the perspective of Sharia knows that there is ikhtilaf (difference of opinion) on this matter. This is a new issue in fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), so there can be no absolute certainty about it.

… Why then, after purchasing a book with my own money, do I not have the right to share it online for free?

However, I acknowledge the ikhtilaf on this issue and respect the opposing viewpoint—though I do not share it—with one exception: when it comes to religious and, more broadly, scientific knowledge. It is my firm belief that access to important and necessary information should be available to everyone.

Have you heard of Sci-Hub? If not, take some time to Google it. I am convinced that it is absolutely remarkable and that we should follow their example. Knowledge should be accessible to everyone, regardless of where they live or whether they have the means to purchase books.

7. Supporting knowledge, including Islamic sciences, is undoubtedly one of the most important deeds. Supporting dawah (Islamic preaching) is even more crucial than helping the poor. Providing people with nourishment for the Hereafter is more valuable and honorable than feeding them in this world.

I hope Muslims begin to understand this. But this support should never be associated with restricting access to beneficial information, prohibiting copying, or imposing limitations on sharing materials.

What if Imam al-Bukhari had prohibited copying his Sahih?
What if Imam al-Shafi'i had placed copyright on *Al-Umm*?
What if Imam al-Ghazali had required royalties for his books to be paid to his heirs?

Therefore, while I respect the position of those who recognize the legitimacy of copyright in general, I am convinced that scientific, religious, and any other knowledge essential for life and work should be freely distributed and available 24/7.

By restricting access to such knowledge, we are enabling the contagious ignorance that continues to grow and spread around us.

Everyone can contribute to this cause:
- Buy a useful e-book and make it publicly available.
- Scan and share a valuable paper book.

Yes, support authors financially, buy their books—but do not deprive access to those who, for one reason or another, cannot afford to purchase them.

Hello everyone, this is a message from Sci-Hub founder, Alexandra Elbakyan. Just to clarify some doubts:

1. Sci-Hub is "she/her", not "them/they"

That is, I'm the only creator and administrator of Sci-Hub project since 2011. Nobody else involved. Ever.

However, there are people who are currently running third-party Sci-Hub mirrors, but they are not in any way connected to me or to the original project.

2. Since 2017 I had a dream (or fantasy) to launsh Sci-Hub coin, that can be used to fund open science projects. For example, journals could use such coin to pay reviewers, and etc. However, I did not have time to actually implement this idea.

Suddenly, in November 2024 a group of Chinese Sci-Hub users have launched $scihub meme coin, in order to support the project. I know there is a lot of doubts and suspicions around this project. But the fact is, the meme coin already helped Sci-Hub a lot. I was never able to collect the same amount simply by asking for donations on the website.

You can decide yourself, if you want to support this project (Sci-Hub meme coin) or to let it die.

Apart from paying for Sci-Hub servers and technical infrastructure, I could use the token to obtain new papers, as well as for paper works neccessary for Sci-Hub to be accepted as a legal project in all countries of the world.
I'm not interested in buying new house at the moment, and I also do not have a driving license (i.e. the money will not be spent to buy an expensive car)

3. After Twitter has banned Sci-Hub account in 2021, I decided that Sci-Hub should not have any official accounts in social media. Imagine, you're investing your time and soul into these accounts, and after that your work is just banned or deleted!

4. However, after the Sci-Hub meme token was launched, I got pressured by crypto community to continue social media activity, because it is important for the token, to continuously attract attention.

In response to this, I decided to invite a social media marketing specialist from the community to manage Sci-Hub communities in Facebook and Telegram, and promote the token. He has also attempted to create a new Sci-Hub account on Twitter, but it got banned again.

5. When will Sci-Hub resume uploading new papers?

When the project becomes legal, then it will 100% continue its work. Maybe earlier.
