С севера от врагов Суздаль защищала р. Каменка, а с востока, юга и запада — укрепления, которые начали возводить еще в X веке. Тогда и построили земляные насыпи и рвы-канавы, наполненные водой, укрепленные изнутри.
Позднее, в XI–XII веках, возвели саму крепость. На них возвышались бревенчатые стены, ворота и башни. Остатки древних валов и рвов сохранились до наших дней.
