Another thing not mentioned: canning food can help you out so much later on if you find yourself sick for an extended period of time, such as during pregnancy or just during the winter when you have several kids passing around illness.

We’ve dealt with a combination of these two things in the past few months. Thankfully, I’d spent the summer and early fall canning as much as I had time for. It’ll be even more helpful when I start using a pressure canner and have cooked meat on hand.

After a few months of intense morning sickness (that lasted all day, of course), I’ve finally gotten back to working on long term food storage. In December, I snagged ~7 lbs of cranberries for $1/lb but had to freeze them because I was too sick to do anything with them at the time. On Saturday, I started the process of thawing them, canning 8 quarts of cranberry juice, and then attempting to dry the remaining in the oven.

Rather than juicing, straining, etc. beforehand, I chose to do what is basically a raw pack with enough sugar to pull the juice out of the cranberries over the next 5 weeks or so. I’ll filter out the berries when we go to use it. I’ll update in a few weeks when we can taste test it! Instructions can be found here: https://practicalselfreliance.com/canning-cranberry-juice/

I don’t have a dehydrator so I dried the leftover cranberries in the oven at its lowest temp (170 F) for… I don’t even know how long. I checked every hour and flipped them, but I think I overdid it. Still tasty tho!

Reminder that this starts during pregnancy and when they birth their child, read the research with your wife and find out what you can do to help protect her and baby from medical violence. The state's effort's to have control of your child do not start when the child comes out, they start in utero.
