Statement on the EU-Armenia Parliamentary Partnership Committee Final Statement and Recommendations
We appreciate the Committee’s efforts to address Armenia’s regional challenges and condemn Azerbaijan’s historical and ongoing aggressive actions. However, we must emphasize that the portrayal of Armenia’s domestic political environment is misleading and fails to acknowledge critical governance issues.
The assertion that Armenia is a fully functioning democracy and a leader in good governance is far removed from reality. In truth, Armenia faces serious democratic deficits, including the suppression of opposition voices, politically motivated prosecutions, and a significant lack of judicial independence. The provisions on media freedom, judicial reforms, and human rights do not accurately reflect the current conditions in the country. At present, political opposition members are being targeted with prosecutions: a development that directly undermines the democratic principles the statement intends to uphold.
In contrast, we strongly support the recommendations addressing Azerbaijan’s continued aggression and the ethnic cleansing of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh. Recognizing the right of displaced people to return, demanding the release of Armenian prisoners, and emphasizing the protection of Armenian cultural heritage and properties are vital steps toward justice and accountability. These measures are essential not only for remedying past injustices but also for ensuring long-term regional stability. They must remain a priority for both the European Union and the international community.
We urge the EU to move beyond rhetoric and implement concrete measures, including targeted sanctions on Azerbaijan, to enforce compliance with international law. The forced displacement of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh constitutes a grave violation of human rights. We call on the EU to lead efforts to secure the safe return of these displaced populations under international protection and to facilitate the release of all detained Armenians in Baku.
