В ближайшие три года правительство выделит на сохранение озера Байкал почти 22 млрд рублей, из них 12,5 млрд рублей — в этом году. Главная задача — это ликвидация последствий работы Байкальского целлюлозно-бумажного комбината, проработавшего почти 50 лет, с 1966 по 2013 год.
Байкальский ЦБК, до 2010 года подконтрольный Олегу Дерипаске, ежегодно сбрасывал в озеро Байкал от 27 до 49 млн тонн сточных вод. По данным Росгеологии, в 14 картах-накопителях БЦБК за 40 лет собралось более 6,2 млн тонн отходов.
