В первые годы работы метро турникеты принимали монеты номиналом 5, а затем 15 копеек. Позже их заменили на пластиковые жетоны, но они оказались неудобными в применении. В 1994 году ввели металлические жетоны, которые выкупили у московского метрополитена.
