В Каире есть цитадель. В цитадели - мечеть. Там - часовая башня. На башне часы. Они были направлены из Франции в 1845 году в обмен на древний обелиск из Луксора (именно он и стоит на площади Согласия в Париже).

Часы, правда, оказались бракованные, в итоге так и не завелись. Заменить их французам даже не пришло в голову.

P.S. Вроде незадолго до нашего приезда египтяне наконец их починили сами, без участия французов, путём полной замены механизма. Спустя полтора века. Звучит обнадеживающе.
