عطاء هو ابن أبي رباح تابعي، كان مفتي مكة من كبار العلماء. وقد كان سمع بحيى وعلمه قبل أن يأتيه ويلتقي به. وفيه الترفق في المدح، فقد يهلك الممدوح، فيكون المادح: رام نفعا فضر من غير قصد .. ومن البر ما يكون عقوقا ! وقد جاء في النهي عن المدح ما لا يخفى عليكم.
