کوه المپوس، بزرگ‌ترین آتشفشان منظومه شمسی است که در مریخ قرار دارد. این آتشفشان از نوع آتشفشان‌های سپری[1] است و ارتفاع آن بیش از دو برابر اورست تخمین زده شده است همینطور مساحت تحت پوشش این کوه به ۳۰۰ هزار کیلومتر مربع می‌رسد که با مساحت کشور ایتالیا برابری می‌کند. لازم به ذکر است بیشترین میزان فعالیت آتشفشانی در منظومه شمسی برای مریخ نیست، حال این پرسش مطرح می‌شود که علت بزرگی این آتشفشان چیست؟ به دلیل کم بودن جاذبه و نبود تکتونیک صفحه‌ای، در مناطقی که با نام نقطه داغ[2] شناخته می‌شوند، تا زمان تخلیه‌ی کامل گدازه، فوران از یک محل خاص رخ می‌دهد و به این ترتیب کوهی بسیار عظیم تشکیل می‌شود. اما در زمین به علت حرکت صفحات، مواد مذاب طی زمان از نقاط مختلف فوران می‌کنند.
