Сам царь со своей матерью в это время находились под Костромой. Поляки заставили Ивана Сусанина показать, где прячется молодой Романов. Сусанин согласился и повёл поляков, но в противоположную сторону — к болотам и лесам. Лишь зайдя в самую глубь леса, поляки поняли, что идут в другую сторону. Крестьянин принял мучительную смерть от поляков, но не выдал, где прятался царь. Благодаря этому решению Михаил Фёдорович с матерью успели бежать в Кострому и укрыться за стенами Ипатьевского монастыря.
