Геннадий Косарев начал карьеру после ГИТИСа в московском театре им. В.В. Маяковского. Там он проработал 11 лет, сыграл свыше десяти ролей. Позже артист переехал в Петербург и более 30 лет прослужил в Молодежном театре на Фонтанке.
Он также снимался в сериалах, среди которых "Улицы разбитых фонарей", "Литейный", Агент особого назначения", "Военная разведка: Западный фронт", "Невский. Проверка на прочность".
